Tommy Fleetwood’s 5 Tips to Becoming the REAL “Irons Man”

The following tip comes from a LIVE golfing lesson from our friends at Me And My Golf where they got to step on the green with Tommy Fleetwood.

I’ve condensed the 5 most essential tips talked about for you but you can go watch the full video if you want as well.

Who knows maybe one day we’ll do a special issue where we give you the biggest takeaways they’ve learned from over 12 YEARS of helping people improve their golf game 👀

1️⃣ Watch your divots. They let you know how “aligned” your shot is and also the quality of your shot. You obviously don’t want the divots too deep with your irons, but knowing how to get under your shot a little more WITHOUT losing all your power is how you get to the next level in your golf game.

2️⃣ Judge your carry, NOT your yardage. How you hit a 100+ yard shot with your irons is entirely dependent on the type of grass you’re hitting it onto. Not to mention the types of hazards and slope you’re also dealing with. So when deciding which of your irons (or other clubs) to hit with don’t leave out the most important part of you shot.

3️⃣ Even PGA players favor draws or fades. Get it out of your head if you still struggle to perfectly straight shots as Tommy knows most of his shots are going to tend to draw for him personally. You simply need to know how consistently you can hit INTENTIONAL draws and fades, along with how to adjust your shot set up for the ones you can’t fix.

4️⃣ Have “rough” practices. Like we’ve mentioned before, intentionally putting yourself in difficult positions at practice helps you shape your shots when you unintentionally shank your ball into the trees. So every now and then, see how predictably you can still hit your ball 100+ yards with your irons from the rough. Tommy even gives a great 5 minute lesson on hitting from the rough in this video.

5️⃣ Know the difference in your irons. As much as we lump “irons” together in these types of tips, the difference between a 7, 8, and especially 9 iron can be remarkable. When you get consistent enough with your shots you can make quick judgement calls where each club gets you. After all, there’s a big difference in being 15 yards in front of the pin and 15 yards over the pin where there’s a sand trap.

Are We Getting Hit in the (Golf) Balls??

This story is very interesting to me.

Because either this is going to affect ALL of us…

Or none of us.

Dall-E Generated Image

The regulations were first proposed in early March of this year and would potentially be put into regulation for all PGA and other “Elite level organizations” by January 2026.

The exact regulations are still being discussed but they stem from the concern that the average drive distance elite players are hitting keeps getting bigger

And this is reducing the amount of golf courses able to accommodate for these increased distances.

But personally…

I don’t think we should be forcing players to play with less effective golf balls.

Partially because the increase in average drive distance is only 20 yards in the past 20 years which isn’t that much.

But also because you can’t make a ball that’s “overpowered”.

If you make the ball able to be hit farther…

Then you also reduce the back spin capability of it.

And this has been proven time and time again.

But also…

More regulations on professional golf balls is going to increase the cost of golf balls for the rest of us.

(And my wife is already on the edge of how much I spend on golf as it is lol)
