The 5 Backswing SINS 👹

The Dot Trick. This one comes directly from David Leadbetter’s video with Good Good Extra. In it he recommends putting a dot on your lead forearm. This helps you track that your swing is properly set. If you can’t see the dot at the top of your backswing then you likely aren’t getting the most power out of your swing.

Watch Your Backswing the Whole 18. Now, your swing will not be the same the whole course. Recording your swing throughout your game, not just during practice, can help to not only catch when you’re falling back onto old habits though. It also can help you see WHAT you keep going back to. Next round, try to track if your backswing is causing you to come down too steep or wide.

Don’t Let the Club Get Behind You. This one will cause some debate because of how “backwards” it can feel. Watch your arms placement then on your backswing and check you’re not sacrificing speed for accuracy. Of course, there is a difference between bringing your club back all the way and letting your arms get in a weird position to where a slice is inevitable.

If you’re struggling with understanding that balance, Top Speed Golf has a great 30-minute training on it 👇

Keep Your Left Heel Down And Your Shot Straight. A big problem people have when swinging with their driver is they focus more on power than their form. This is most evident in their legs. You want to be using your hips more than your feet or else you’ll shank that shot. Golfswing Distillery has a great article on this one actually.

Don’t Let Your Hips or Head Leave the “Box”. If you were to imagine a box going from your feet all the way to your shoulders, you need to keep your head and hips from swaying too far back from the edges. By simply tracking how far back you shift on that plane with a camera you can greatly reduce how much you slice and hook your driver. So the next time you get on the course, don’t get self-conscious about filming your shot if you really want to fix this.

Is Charlie Woods the Next Tiger Woods??

There’s two things that are going on with this story of Tiger Woods’ son taking the world by storm (or at least my timeline)

1️⃣ It’s getting every dad EXCITED that they’re kid just might join them in their golf addiction

But also…

2️⃣ It’s getting every dad NERVOUS that they’re kids might be better than them to

It’s a hard line to balance.

Because for me, while I’d love to be able to take my kids to the greens in the future…

I also already have a hard enough time when I introduce friends to this sport and they start catching up to me 😂.

But all that in mind the stats do say he’s on track to do some amazing things.

(And possibly give us an amazing competitive match between father and son as we see if he can handle that 2️⃣ situation we talked about 👀)

Charlie currently is #86 in the Junior Golf Scoreboard for the graduating class of 2027.

On top of that, he’s also already scored a 66 from just really beginning his golfing career during COVID.

And if that hasn’t hit you in your pride yet…

He also hit his driver for 320 yards last Saturday

Regardless if he ends up outdoing his dad and his accomplishments though, I think we can really learn a lot from how Tiger went about getting his son into Golf.

He never pressured him into or expected him to do it.

He let him fall in love with it all on his own.

Something that all of us parents will always have an internal battle for.

Trivia Answer:

In 1858, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews made the rules official: “One round of the Links, or 18 holes, is considered a match, unless otherwise specified.”
