3 Exercises to Hit Drivers and Irons Straight

To start us off this week I wanted to back to one of the most basic…

YET MOST IMPORTANT part about golf.

Hitting the club straight.

On Thursday I’m going over something that separates the Elite golfers and the Amateurs.

But before I go over that there are several exercises I’ve come across that will help you reap the two rewards from straighter shots:

✅ Getting more distance

✅ Getting more accuracy

Chuck Quinton, founder of Rotary Swing, found that the main reason people don’t swing straight is they come down on their swing too wide and almost reach out to the ball. This makes the back swing look like a figure-eight as opposed to straight back and forward. His video highlights how practicing with a counter clockwise motion with your wrists helps fix this with drastic results in just minutes.

Exercise #2 - The Handoff

Another problem people have is their follow through on their shot. Getting the muscle memory for how your shot needs to finish can really help those who know just by the way they hit the ball that it wouldn’t be pretty. To improve your follow through take your top arm and raise it so it’s pointed towards the pin. Then, with the club in your bottom hand, gently swing it until it reaches your lead hand. Mark Crossfield goes over this in more detail but practicing this even before your shots can help to dial in your form.

Exercise #3 - The Open Shot

Other than your swing path though, your club face is another crucial part of your swing that can ensure you are hitting straight shots. To practice timing your swing so your club face is square with your shot by the time it hits the ball is taking your bottom hand and keeping your palm open through your practice swing. What you want to happen is for that open palm to be facing square towards the hole at the bottom of your shot, this will let you know that your club face is also square at that same point.

Are You Really “One Club Away” From Improving Your Golf Game?

Like you I have from time to time looked at the newest golf clubs at the Pro Shop and thought,

“Maybe if I just bought that new driver I’d get better…”

It’s always a thought that is immediately followed by me thinking of one of my favorite golf memes 👇

There were several star PGA Golfers who actually had fair amounts of success in switching up their gear last weekend at the Hero World Challenge.

👀 👀 👀

Now now now…

I’m not saying that your credit card is the only thing in between you and hitting nothing but pars and birdies this weekend.

BUT…

It does go to show how important it is to switch up your equipment.

Getting a new driver, putter, pitching wedge, or even 8-iron can help get you excited and get you in the zone to play out of your mind.

Even going beyond the mental side as well, some golf clubs have seen enough tee-boxes and greens to warrant a well deserved retirement.

(Golf.com also has a great article to know just when that last round of golf should be)

So the next time you pass by the Pro Shop after 18 holes, maybe it’s time to listen to that inner voice telling you it is time for a club change.

Just be sure you’re not THAT guy when you drop $1,000 on clubs and still shank it into the trees 😂
